Five Stars for Five Spice Pork

One of the most recognizable flavors in Asian cooking is probably Chinese five spice. If you don't recognize the name, you would probably recognize the taste--the flavor is not shy and is used in several Asian dishes.

Five spice is comprised of (cleverly enough) five spices: star anise, cloves, cinnamon, szechuan pepper, and ground fennel. Sometimes, it can be a bit overpowering. But these five spiced-pork chops we had the other night? Stood right up to the bold flavors and made my taste buds hum with delight.

The full menu included five spice-pork chops with a cilantro-jalepeno cream sauce, hash browns, and spicy sesame green beans.

The pork chops were lightly rubbed with five spice, S&P, then seared over medium-high heat in some olive oil to get a crispy crust. After being finished in the oven (because they were seriously thick), they got topped with a luxurious cilantro cream sauce (cilantro, jalepeno, garlic, green onion, white wine, cream).

Let me just say that I wish I had a plate of this in front of me right now. Five stars!

What are some of your favorite, go-to spices? Do tell!

Happy Searching!

  1. Can't live without cumin, fleur de sel, and crushed red pepper. Of course you can always just get by with sea salt and fresh cracked pepper. Simple is always better, unless you're making chili.

  2. Cumin is one of my favs too along with cayenne and sea salt. Tarragon is also a go to for chicken breasts. I'd sure love your recipe for the green beans. I make mine with toasted sesame seeds, salt, pepper and garlic and sauteed in sesame oil but I'm always looking for new ways to make them!

  3. What the heck is fleur de sel? My gourmet cooking is garlic in everything. I do love cumin, cliantro and sesame oil for a wide variety of dishes also. NO BEANS PLEASE.

  4. Here's the recipe, Danielle--it's not too far off from yours! :)

    Spicy Sesame Green Beans
Blanch green beans. Saute over medium-high heat with sesame oil, minced ginger, and chili garlic sauce (all to taste). Top with toasted almonds and sesame seeds. Enjoy!

  5. Busy Bee - fleur de sel is a fancy way of saying sea salt but fleur de sel is beyond the sea salt you would buy at the grocery store. William Sonoma is the place to buy true fleur de sel. They actually have quite the collection of salts.

Thanks Jen! That is pretty close to my recipe. Gonna give it a try though!
